Superb Rugby Weekend for Zug Rugby!

The 1stXV won on Sunday 31:0 against Rugby Union Zürich. Solid effort with even more solid defense. Simon, Harry and Breon being the players of the day and Brandon having his great rugby sunday scoring 15 points (with 3 tries!) and also nominated for the rugby crime!

In their first match of the season the 2ndXV did beat Luzern II 8:20. Ian, David B. and Nici got the points for players of the day. David Fischer well deserved the rugby crime. Simon overcame his broken toe and scored 10 points with 1 try, 1 penalty and 1 conversion. And Sebastian Suter had his first game ever  - congratulations.

New Start for ZRC I & II

Dear Rugby friends

We had a great start into the NLC season with the 1st XV - 3 matches and 14 points, best defense and best offense of the NLC.

1stXV: Great performance against Ticino (54:8) with fast and strong support at breakdowns, real team effort and good communication. Forwards working hard with a stable scrum, excellent pick and go play at the breakdown as well with lots of yard winning rushes. Line-outs have to be worked on. Backs being lined up the better the longer the game was on have been using the gaps created by the forwards for 6 tries - they had also a very good positioning in defense and were faster then Ticino. 9 and 10 have been strong in interlinking forwards and backs and organized a simple but efficient game.

2ndXV: Unfortunately we had not enough players for the first match of the 2nd XV in the 1st League East - please make an effort to sign in also for the 2nds. It's fun and it's important to integrate our young players which are eager to play decent rugby!
Oval regards, Stefan

ZRC MINIS Update

The new season : After a relaxing summer break, we will start back the new season on Sunday 18th August; this is the day before the International School starts back. For those that are new, we will run the season up until the snow arrives, normally the end of November, and we will have some tournaments to attend during this time.

New Kits: Dave and I have been looking at new kits and we are about to place an order for new shirts, (shorts and socks will remain the same). We should take delivery of the shirts before the season starts and we will be giving each paid member of the club a shirt free of charge. As usual additional shirts will be available for parents (at cost + a small margin).

2012/2013 Player awards : We intend to hold the annual player awards straight after the first day back training session, we would normally hold this on the last playing day of the season; however we were at Lausanne this year. Each and every player will be given a club medal and we will recognise those players that coaches think have made exceptional contributions. If the weather holds out for us (fingers crossed), we would do this in the Unterageri Badi around lunchtime on 18th August.

Zug Rugby Club Tournament : We have already registered ourselves to hold our home tournament on 29th September 2013. Last year we used the Badi as our base, however, this year we will have to organise most of it ourselves. Please watch this space as we will require a number of volunteers to help on the day.

Professional Rugby Coaching : On the weekend of the 24th August, I have arranged for the academy coaches from Worcester Warriors to come to Zug. They will be running coaching sessions for our coaches, our kids and our senior club. This is a date for your diary as final itinerary is not concluded yet, but both coaches and kids will benefit significantly from these sessions, please watch this space.

Viva la Zug

The game in Lausanne was not the positive out come I had hoped for. We made too many handling errors, and a lot of simple mistakes. The weather conditions were not great for attacking rugby. And the basic fundamental game was missing much like many of our senior players. We have much to work on at training over the next few weeks. We had limited ball due to a ref with one eye that saw only French things all day. Ref aside we needed to produce better rugby than we did. Next week is another game and another chance to redeem ourselves as a Rugby Kanton .

Viva la Zug

RC Fribourg II vs. ZRC II 0:35

A short game report from the 2nds vs Fribourg. The game got off to a great start, with a coach (not me, a big bus) organised by Fanti leaving Zug full of keen 2nds players. Having 20 players going away for a 2nds game is something of a win by itself.

Overall everyone played their heart out, knew their job and when to do it. From the very start ‘rolling thunder’ was used really well, with people jogging to get into position. Again and again we punched through their line, creating opportunities for big runs.

The first try came early from an awesome lineout and rolling maul which pushed them back 20m and nearly went over, but the bad guys stopped it. So the backs passed it all the way to the other side where Tom went over with an assist from Steve.

Of particular note were the loose forwards. They were absolutely everywhere, tackling anything that moved. Very quickly it was clear the opposition did not know what to do with the ball when they had it because of the pressure they were under. And when we had the ball; wow. All the forwards constantly got into position for the busting runs, and then the ball was getting out to the backs who would then find holes to run through. I lost count of how many times it got out to the wings, which is a great sign.

Matt did a great job at 9 with ^%$# French being offside all the time and diving on him before he touched the ball. Antoine was great at 10, marshalling the troops and keeping the calls coming. His boot also helped pile on the points with 2 penalties and 2 conversions.

The discipline was good. No talking back to the ref, only a few balls thrown away in the tackles, and everyone getting into line when it was time to tackle. The 2-in-the-tackle really screwed with the bad guys’ game plan.

Some things to work on. At times, especially during warming up, far too much chatter. And a couple of times the calls went silent, which was when we stopped making meters. The instant they started up again, we started pushing the other side back.

The points went to;

3 to Storm, who was all over the field like a rash. He was either tackling something, or breaking through their line.
2 to Ilan, who was with Storm everywhere, and made just as many breaks. A pity his try was disallowed.
1 to Matt at 9 who did a fantastic job for his first game at 9, having to deal with offside French diving over the rucks.

Noteable games were from Felix, the other loose forward, the entire front row of Nici, Mauro and Ilyr who played more like loose forwards than front-row, and Tom at full back. Any ball kicked over he got and brought back immediately.

The final score was 35-0 to the good guys, 5 un-answered tries. They never really even looked like scoring.

A fantastic start to the season. Let’s keep it going.

Cheers,

Chris.

PS But perhaps the biggest winner of the day was the bus trip back with crates of beer from Baar Brauerei.

Rugby Minis New Season

I am pleased to announce that we have fixed the date when rugby training will start back following the winter break. As you will see we will start a little bit earlier than we were originally thinking due to a tournament that has just been announced and we will be attending in Zurich. Please put the following dates in your diary :

1. Sunday 31st March - Training from 0930 @ Lidostrasse, Unterageri

2. Saturday 6th April - Training from 1600 @ Lidostrasse, Unterageri

3. Sunday 7th April - Tournament @ Zurich

As you can see we are planning a special pre-tournament training session on Saturday 6th April. We are planning this as we know many players will be on vacation and not able to attend the first session on Sunday 31st March, so we need this extra session to make sure we are as well prepared as possible for the tournament in Zurich the following day.

We anticipate taking full Contact teams in U10, U12 & U14 age categories to the Zurich tournament. No need for any players to advise regarding availability yet - I will send a separate note regarding this in the next day or 2.

More to follow in due course...
